"Poverty is the mother of crime."
|
The York Community Progress Council (York CPC), providing almost fifty years of service to the community, assists hundreds of thousands of low-income citizens live more self-sufficient lives. With nine programs, this organization continues to mend the poverty issue in York County. This, in turn, has had a greater impact on crime and is making York a more positive environment for everyone to enjoy. The York CPC is also affecting humanity as a whole by being committed to fairness, diversity, and inclusion. While poverty and self-sufficiency may seem like a global issue, it is also very prevalent in York; CPC works hard to affect the lives of people in our community, which branches out to the rest of the world.
The evident connection between crime and poverty is seen throughout all parts of the globe. Whether it is piracy, drugs, poaching, or blood diamonds, most of these illegal activities are in order to make money. Most of these problems are also in poorer and less developed countries. For example, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the center for blood diamond activities, has a GDP/capita of $364 with 45 murders per 100,000. However, the United Kingdom has an GDP/capita of $35,083 and 0.44 murders per 100,000. This shows a correlation between murders and income. This means poor villages in Somalia often resort to piracy because their farming and fishing aren't enough to provide for themselves. The border between the United States and Mexico sees a lot of drug trafficking because the people selling the drugs are escaping the lifestyle of poverty. Many organizations help heal these problems in poorer parts of the world, such as Action Against Hunger International, help to keep people from resorting to crime to make money. Here in York, the Community Progress Council does the same thing to help people to live more self-sufficient lives.
